How Do Fly's Sense Smell?

While flies do not have noses like we do, flies are absolutely capable of smelling but in a different way. They rely on their two-head antennae to lead the way for them when it comes to smell. These antennae are covered in fine hairs that contain sensory receptors for smells.

When smells hit those receptors, it sends a signal to the fly's brain and the fly will choose to travel to the direction of their preferred smell. Due to this, flies can find smells from 8-10 miles (13-16 km) away.

  • Flies use their sense of smell to search for food and find shelter.
  • The olfactory system of a fly is outstanding.
  • It is capable of detecting a broad range of smells unlike humans - which play a significant role in searching food.

Now let's uncover the list of things that flies absolutely hate:

1. Citrus (Lime, Lemon And Orange)

Flies have been long known for their aversion to citrusy scents which makes them an excellent natural repellent. Create a homemade fly-repellent by mixing water with essential citrus oils.

Squeeze out limonene from the citrus peel using a stone press or any technique and mix it with water to create a citrus solution. Place the solution in a spray bottle and spritz it over common fly areas and various entrances to your house to repel the flies.

2. Lavender

Lavender is one of the aromas that flies do not like. Just plant some herbs of lavender in a pot and put them near the entrance, window, or outdoor sitting areas and forget about flies.

You can prevent the flies from entering your home while you are out enjoying the outdoors.

5. Eucalyptus Oil

Talking about essential oils without mentioning eucalyptus is unfair. The oil is extremely versatile in that it can clear nasal congestion, repel mosquitoes - and get rid of flies.

Since the flies dislike their powerful aroma, we recommend allowing the aroma to stay strong by using eucalyptus soaked cotton balls instead of making a spray solution. Place these cotton balls near windows, vents, or any other entry point.
